We have all sinned. That means that we have done things which God dislikes. Examples: Who asks about God these days? Who does good things? Many people curse and are embittered. Many kill and many commit fornications.

But you may think that you do not do any of the above: “I do not do anything bad”, Others do worse things then I do”, “I try to be a good person”. That may be the case, but just one bad thought, one insulting word, one bad fantasy make us sinners before God. If we sin 3 times a day (one bad though and two curses) and we do this 365 times a day. That would sum up to 1095 sins a year. If we started cursing and having bad thoughts at the age of 10 and we live to be 80 years old. That means that we would have sinned more then 75000 times before we have died.

>>> Romans 3,23 >>> for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

>>> Romans 3,10-18 >>> As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.” “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

The punishment that we have earned for our sins is death. Not only bodily death but eternal death.

We cannot save ourselves. Do you know how good we would have to be to save ourselves?

>>> Matthew 5,48 >>> You would have to be perfect like God is: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Even though we sin, God loves us eternally and he therefore does not want to punish us.

>>> Jeremiah 31,3 >>> The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

>>> Ezekiel 18,23 >>> Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

There has never been any moment in which God did not love us. But the Bible says that God is holy and righteous. That is why he has to punish us for our sins.

>>> Ezekiel 18,4 >>> For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child- both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.

How would you react to such an offence? Example: If someone were to harm any of your family members? Would you let him go or would you try to catch him and punish him for what he had done? Or if you were a judge and you would have to decided weather to send a criminal to jail or let him go, what would you do?

So on the one hand we know that God loves us infinitely and he would like to live with us in an intimate relationship. On the other hand we know that God is holy and righteous and he therefore has to punish us for our sins. So how can we receive the gift of eternal life?
