OK. At the moment of accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we are born again. Is that correct? Yes. But if you have a look at your feet, they may still look old with scarf skin. What about your hands? They may also still look the same. This may disappoint you, but if you look into the mirror, you will notice that it has not been made new.

Does that mean that newly born is a hoax? Of course it is not a hoax. God does not lie. So if Jesus says: “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” then something other then our outer appearance is meant. Even today it may sound as awkward as it had sounded more then 2000 years ago. That is why Nicodemus asks Jesus: “How can someone be born when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”.

To understand what Jesus meant with “born again”, We have to know what we are. We are spirit (not a spooky ghost which you may think of as in films regarding old haunted castles, but a spiritual being). Our real “me”. Our inner being is a spirit. We have a soul (feelings, a mind and memory, etc.) as well as a body (flesh).

Spirit and soul are immortal. Both dwell in the body. Even if our body dies, we keep on living eternally as conscious personalities.

At this moment, our body is decaying. It decays more and more the older we get until it dies. The body is intended for the grave. That is it's destination. So when Jesus talks about being born again, then he is not talking about the body. He is talking about being born again in the spirit. Even our soul with it's memories, emotions, the mind, etc. is not born again. Only the spirit. If our soul would be reborn, what would happen to our memories?

>>> John 3,3-15 >>> Jesus replied, “ “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
